Step Up Surfers Paradise calls on local dancers

Step Up Surfers Paradise – an electrifying dance competition featuring the best talents of all ages on Surfers Paradise Beach from March 29 to 30. South-East Queensland dance schools are now invited to battle it out in a range of genres including hip-hop, jazz, funk, street, break, lyrical and Latin for the chance to share in $5,000 prize money. Step Up Surfers Paradise will also see internationally renowned hip-hop choreographer Jasmine Meakin take centre stage as guest judge, supported by a panel of industry professionals. Entries for Step Up Surfers Paradise close on March 8 and organisers Surfers Paradise Alliance are calling on dance schools and individuals to get their entries in quickly to avoid disappointment. Surfers Paradise Alliance CEO Mike Winlaw said Step Up Surfers Paradise is ultimately an audience dress rehearsal ahead of the official dance competition season. “Dance is engrained in our history and is part of our culture, and we are very excited to provide an opportunity for our youth to perform on the most idyllic stage on the Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise beach,” he said. “We are expecting 200 dancers from across the south-east to take part in the competition, which is significant growth on last year’s event. “Queensland, and the Gold Coast in particular, has a thriving modern dance community. This type of competition, and the extremely high calibre of dancers it attracts, provides competitors with the invaluable opportunity to perform in front of a large and enthusiastic audience.” Mr Winlaw said the competition is shining the spotlight on street and hip-hop as the genres continue to grow in popularity. “Our judge Jasmin Meakin is one of the biggest names in hip-hop, and for dancers to be able to perform in front of someone of Jasmin’s calibre and experience is an unmissable opportunity,” he said. “We have a very high standard of street and hip-hop talent here on the Gold Coast and we are really looking forward to all the performances. “This is the kind of dancing that is everywhere – in music videos and on stage at events such as the Grammys. It’s gained incredible popularity and the audience absolutely loves it.” Step Up Surfers Paradise entries close March 8.
